PATHOLOGY: Traumatic Brain Injury
Dustin is originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up participating in a wide variety of sports, including baseball, golf, and tennis. His family also went skiing frequently. Dustin joined the Army in Spring of 2001, serving in OEF I, OIF I, and OIF III. While Dustin was on patrol in Mosul, Iraq in 2005, a vehicle-borne IED detonated, injuring the left side of his lower body and leaving him with a TBI. After an emergency surgery and two weeks of medical treatment, Dustin returned to duty.
Dustin began to notice the effects of his TBI after his time in service ended, including flashbacks and feeling isolated socially. He spent many years using negative coping methods to address the experience, until two years ago when he began working to build positive habits. Dustin wants to use his time with ATF to strengthen his legs, as well as to gain more knowledge to help other adaptive athletes achieve their goals through sports.
