DOI: At birth

PATHOLOGY: Bilateral Below Knee Amputee

James Mauldin

James’ father went to China to adopt a girl, but instead met James, a sweet baby boy who was born missing his legs below the knee and digits on his left hand. Growing up in Connecticut, James experienced bullying around his physical differences, but he found peace through being active. He enjoyed running, biking, and swimming and completed a triathlon his junior year in high school.

After graduating high school, James has worked to find his path in life. Three and half years ago, he made the decision to move to Dallas to be closer to his prosthetist and become fully self-sufficient. He’s learned a lot through his independence and believes it’s the best decision he’s made for his future.

James is currently in the process of pursuing either the fire academy/EMT school or the police academy, both of which have a rigorous physical and mental process. His time at ATF will be spent as a training camp, doing things like rope climbing and carrying heavy things, ultimately gearing him up to pursue this dream.
