Kate Hwang 26 Wide

Growing up in Courtland, MN, Kate enjoyed participating in as many events and clubs as she could. She split her time between athletics, music - band and choir, and church activities. She went on to get her degree in Criminal Justice Law Enforcement followed by her Master’s degree in Public Administration.

This led her to her career with the Kansas City PD in the summer of 2002. One year later, on June 12th, 2003, Kate and her partner were ambushed by attackers who did not want their vehicle ticketed. She endured severe closed-head trauma which led her to experience seizures, but her desire to continue serving led her to mask the effects of the trauma.

Kate advanced early in her career to become an undercover narcotics detective working alongside FBI and DEA informants. She enjoyed the excitement and busyness of that role. Shortly after going to Sergeant School and making the Sergeant List, Kate had to be medically retired due to seizures and other complications from her head injury.

Since her retirement, Kate dove deep into understanding her injury and how it impacts her life. She is now looking for something to ignite her love for competition, whether that be weight lifting, CrossFit, or another direction. Kate is excited to grow during her time at ATF and use the knowledge she gains to better the lives of others.
