PATHOLOGY: Stroke
Angela is from Independence, Missouri, where she grew up playing softball from the age of eight. After high school, she earned multiple college degrees and became mother to three children. One week after giving birth to her youngest child, Angela had a hemorrhagic stroke that resulted in a craniotomy and a three-week stay in the ICU. She was in a medically-induced coma for two weeks to control the pressure on her brain.
When she came out of the coma, Angela had to relearn all basic functions, including speaking and eating. After five months of inpatient rehabilitation, she returned home. The stroke left her with aphasia, as well as a paralyzed right arm and 40% visual field deficit. Through perseverance and hard work, Angela has relearned how to walk and can drive short distances again.
Angela wants to be around others who support and encourage her to continue improving. She values making connections with people in similar situations who will challenge her to achieve her goals. She wants to use her Hyper experience to increase her strength, stamina, and endurance to manage her daily life in raising her children.
