Brenden Butler

Growing up in Texas didn’t stop Brenden from pursuing sports on the ice. He began skating at the age of two and started hockey at five years old. He played throughout his childhood and into high school. Halfway through his senior year, Brenden discovered an unexpected cyst in his left foot.

The tumor in his foot turned out to be cancerous and Brenden was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma at the age of 17. He immediately began chemotherapy and shortly after had his left leg amputated below the knee. At the beginning of this journey, Brenden weighed around 150lbs and when he finished up chemotherapy, he only weighed 115lbs.

As part of his recovery journey, Brenden began coaching a traveling hockey team and went off to college the following year. He plans on applying to prosthetics school and has already had success with his own prototype of a hockey foot, which he successfully used in an adult hockey league.

Brenden recently received a running leg and has aspirations to compete in the Paralympics. His goals through the ReDefine program are to increase his stamina and strength for running, refresh his mindset, and get around like minded individuals striving for their own goals.
