PATHOLOGY: L4-S1 Spinal Cord Injury

Daniela Tapia

Dani grew up in Kansas City, Kansas, where she enjoyed playing team sports and going fishing with her grandpa. During the Fall semester of her Senior year of college, Dani was at her friend’s parents’ house where she was shot in the stomach during a random act of violence. The bullet exited through her back, leaving her with an incomplete L4-S1 spinal cord injury.

Throughout rehab and physical therapy, Dani experienced debilitating nerve pain. She found it difficult to do almost anything and was in and out of the emergency room to address the pain. After four years, Dani underwent two procedures to minimize the nerve pain and began to adjust back into life.

Dani plans to become more independent in her life and begin driving again. She plans to begin building her strength and endurance during Hyper to make her everyday activities easier as well as building her confidence to participate in more social events. She also wants to focus on walking more so she does not have to use her wheelchair as often.
