TY TURNER

2022 CANADIAN PARALYMPIC SNOWBOARD TEAM

BILATERAL BELOW KNEE AMPUTEE

Ty Turner is competing for Team Canada in ParaSnowboarding for the 2022 Paralympics. He has already had a lot of success in the 2021-2022 season. In January, he took home two gold and a bronze medal at World Championships in Norway. Ty earned top point scorer of the season for Men’s LL1 and was awarded at the World Cup on his home soil. He is now on an excellent path as he looks to the Paralympics.

In 2017, Ty experienced a freak crash during a routine skydiving landing, causing him to lose both his legs below the knee along with his identity as an athlete.

Ty first came to the Adaptive Training Foundation in April 2019 for the nine-week ReDefine program. Most recently, he was part of Hyper 3 in August 2021, where he honed his skills and catapulted himself into the 2021-2022 season.

MATTHEW BREWER

2022 US SITTING PARA ALPINE SKI TEAM

BILATERAL ABOVE KNEE AMPUTEE

Matthew Brewer is competing for Team USA in ParaAlpine Skiing for the 2022 Paralympics. With only two years of ski racing under his belt, Matt has caught fire quickly in the sport. Matt won gold in the Huntsman Cup in February and secured his spot for the upcoming Winter Games.

In his mid 20’s, Matthew was shocked with a cancer diagnosis, leading him down a path of opioid addiction. At the age of 30, Matthew became a double above knee amputee due to Compartment Syndrome during an overdose. He lived the next two and half years in fog of addition before Matt gave it all up. He found adaptive sports and gained a community around him.

In August of 2021, Matt took part in Hyper at the Adaptive Training Foundation. This was his first time being formally trained as an athlete outside of his sport. He soaked up every second and has not let off the gas since.

MICHAEL SPIVEY

2022 US PARALYMPIC SNOWBOARD TEAM

BELOW ELBOW AMPUTEE

Michael Spivey is competing for Team USA in ParaSnowboarding. This is his second time competing in the Paralympics. He took home 18th place in BoarderCross in 2018. This season, he competed in many international competitions and will use the experiences learned to set himself up for the Paralympics.

Michael was injured while serving in the US Marine Corps. On December 10th 2012, while on foot patrol, he was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), causing him to lose his left arm below the elbow. After some tough years, he believes finding snowboarding for saved his life.

Michael took part in two Hyper camps during 2021. He gained new tools each time and left with clear goals to reach the Paralympic level again.
