AJ Sullivan

AJ grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, where he was involved in Boy Scouts. He spent much of his youth camping, hiking, practicing archery, and learning survival skills. He also played basketball and baseball before discovering a strong passion for art and music, particularly pottery and marching band. In high school, AJ competed in building trades competitions, drawn to the teamwork and shared purpose those environments fostered. He holds three college degrees: two A.A.S. degrees earned during his military service and a Bachelor of Science in Religion earned after leaving the military.

AJ served in the Air Force from 2008 to 2017, initially working as an avionics technician and later cross-training as a sensor operator flying MQ9 Reaper drones. Over three tours downrange, including deployments to Kyrgyzstan, Qatar, Kuwait, and Iraq, he performed intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions. The nature of his work exposed him to significant moral and psychological challenges, compounded by personal trauma when his family faced abuse and harassment. Physically, AJ manages ongoing pain, but some of his biggest struggles are mental health and social connection.

Now almost two years sober, AJ is focused on developing healthy coping skills and habits. His goals include completing his Certified Personal Trainer certification, progressing in his recovery work, and learning how to build meaningful relationships outside his marriage. His physical goals include losing body fat, rehabilitating chronic injuries, and preparing for his first powerlifting competition. Mentally, AJ is working to overcome negative self-perceptions, manage anxiety, and overcome the perfectionism that holds him back from enjoying his achievements and being more present in life.
