Meet Adaptive Athlete: Christian Guevara

Christian Guevara has always been an athlete. From cross country and track to rugby, triathlons, marathons, Tough Mudders, and competitive cycling, movement and competition have been a major part of his life.

 

In June 2023, a rollover accident initially appeared to be the source of Christian’s injuries. Days later, however, he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered cancer in the right side of his brain and severe hydrocephalus. He underwent emergency surgery, chemotherapy, and whole-brain radiation, spending months in critical care. After being placed on palliative care, his family fought to get him additional treatment at UT Southwestern.

 

Christian eventually returned home and spent months in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, followed by outpatient neurorehabilitation. In 2025, he began training privately and has made significant gains in strength and mobility. He no longer uses a wheelchair.

 

Now, Christian is focused on regaining full function on his left side and rebuilding the confidence and fearlessness he had before his injury. His goals reach far beyond his own recovery, he wants to give back to the adaptive community, help others who are navigating their own challenges, and eventually complete a half marathon, full marathon, and adaptive triathlon.
