PATHOLOGY: C5-7 Spinal Cord Injury
Cody Bennett grew up in Chesapeake, Virginia, where being active was always a central part of his life. From a young age, he threw himself into sports and activities of every kind—gymnastics, motocross, lacrosse, and anything that let him push his limits and stay in motion. He thrived on competition and the challenge of learning new skills, finding joy in staying active and constantly testing himself.
On July 24, 2024, during a gymnastics practice, Cody attempted a routine that ended in a devastating accident. He missed the foam pit, causing him to fall and break his C5–C7 vertebrae. The injury resulted in a spinal cord injury that instantly changed the course of his life. In the days and weeks following the accident, Cody and his family faced the uncertainty and challenges of recovery. Yet even in the midst of hardship, he began to notice ways the experience was shaping him—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Cody describes the injury as something that has, in many ways, helped him grow. Instead of focusing solely on what he lost, he has leaned into the strength, resilience, and perspective he has gained. Since October 2024, he has been training with Emily at Kaizen, channeling his competitive spirit into adaptive training. His goals are ambitious—he wants to keep building strength and speed, compete again at the CrossFit Games, and prepare for the next big chapter of his life: starting college.
