Meet Adaptive Athlete: Dennis Sanders

Dennis Sanders

DOB: 1963

DOI: 1983 & 2023

PATHOLOGY: Poly Peripheral Neuropathy

HyperR3-74

Dennis grew up passionate about fitness, competing in football, wrestling, track, and cross-country before joining the Army as an infantryman from 1982 to 1985. During his service, he injured his knees, which led to a knee replacement in 2023. Two weeks after surgery, his immune system attacked the small nerves in his body, causing poly peripheral small fiber neuropathy.

The early months were extremely challenging, both physically and mentally, as Dennis navigated constant pain and the impact on his mobility. Over time, with effective medication and support, he’s regained balance and adapted his approach to staying active.

Cycling has been a lifelong passion for Dennis, and he’s been riding for over 40 years. Now, his goal is to maintain strength, manage muscle atrophy, and continue finding joy in movement, even if that means adjusting, like switching from mountain biking to an e-mountain bike, to keep a positive mindset and stay connected to the activities he loves.
