Injury: C5-6 Spinal Cord Injury

Class 25 Fernando Batista wide (1)

Fernando was raised in Dallas, Texas and found joy as a kid doing activities like fishing, camping, and hunting. He spent a lot of time outdoors and wasn’t afraid to get his hands dirty. After graduating high school in 2018, Fernando went off to Texas Tech University. As he got older, he fell in love with the gym and would spend two hours a day, six days a week in the gym.

On September 25, 2021, Fernando was hanging with friends when he slipped head first into a shallow above ground pool. He attempted to catch his fall, but hit the bottom with the majority of the impact to his head and neck, instantly paralyzing him from the neck down.

Now, only a year since his accident, Fernando has been making daily steps to progress. His biggest win recently was moving from an electric to a manual wheelchair. During his time at ATF, Fernando wants to continue toward his goal of independence and finding another level to push himself.
