Julia Bledsoe

Julia Bledsoe grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, where sports played a central role in her life from an early age. She fell in love with soccer at just four years old and quickly developed into a highly competitive athlete, competing at the club level and earning recognition as a state champion in 2021. She also excelled as a varsity soccer player and standout cross country runner in high school, balancing her athletic pursuits with interests in music, reading, and baking. Before her injury, Julia had her sights set on continuing her soccer career at the collegiate level.

On May 31, 2024, shortly after finishing her junior year and wrapping up her final soccer game of the season, Julia’s life changed in an instant. A diving injury resulted in a severe cervical spinal cord injury, leaving her fighting for her life. She spent weeks in the ICU undergoing critical surgeries to stabilize her neck, with additional complications including partial lung collapse and vocal cord paralysis. In a matter of moments, the independence and physical capability she had always relied on were taken away.

Julia’s recovery has been marked by determination and resilience. After leaving the ICU, she spent months at Shepherd Center in Atlanta working to regain function and rebuild her strength. As a lifelong athlete, she approached rehabilitation with the same mindset that had driven her success in sports - focused, disciplined, and unwilling to give up, even when faced with the need to relearn nearly every aspect of daily life.

Now preparing to attend Virginia Tech, where she will study Philosophy, Politics, and Economics with a minor in Mandarin Chinese, Julia is focused on building a future defined by independence, growth, and purpose. Through the ReDefine program, she hopes to continue strengthening her body and confidence, while embracing new challenges and opportunities - determined to live fully, pursue her goals, and inspire others along the way.
