Meet Adaptive Athlete: Justin Mathers

DOB: April 19th, 1992

DOI: October 22nd, 2017

PATHOLOGY: Left Drop Foot

Justin Mathers

Justin is a local of Dallas, Texas where he grew up playing football because “I lived in Texas and you don’t live in Texas without playing football.” He recalls the team atmosphere and being under the lights on Friday night.

He attended college but dropped out shortly to join the Army where he served for four years as a Cavalry Scout. He deployed to Iraq multiple times and returned home in 2017 where he was involved in a motorcycle accident that was nearly fatal. The crash resulted in a fused back and hip as well as severe nerve damage that confined him to a wheelchair, having to relearn how to walk. He has drop foot on the left side and loss of muscle function in his left leg.

Despite the injuries, Justin transitioned from the Army and found adaptive sports where he has excelled to become the USA Para C3 road, gravel, and time travel national champion.
