PATHOLOGY: Polyneuropathy
Kevin is originally from La Crescenta, California. He has been a lifelong athlete across multiple sports including baseball, football, and track and field. In August 2017, Kevin was competing in a Spartan Race when he was bitten by a mosquito carrying West Nile Virus. He became ill with flu-like symptoms which continued to worsen until he ended up in the ICU with a failing respiratory system. When he left the ICU weeks later, Kevin was almost completely paralyzed and unable to breathe on his own. After five months on a respirator, he was able to breathe on his own and could move enough to begin physical therapy.
Kevin’s recovery process included five years of physical therapy and working out. He progressed from using a power wheelchair, to walking with knee ankle foot orthotics (KAFO), to competing in cycling races. He wants to use his Hyper experience to continue pushing his limits, becoming more competitive in his sport and acquiring the tools to help push himself and other adaptive athletes. He plans to complete a half marathon in his Grit chair, cycle 50 miles on his road tricycle, and compete in mountain bike races.
