Lorn Mayers

Lorn Mayers grew up between Edmonton and North London, where sport was a constant part of daily life. He was highly active from a young age, participating in football, cricket, basketball, field hockey, table tennis, and recreational activities like cycling and roller skating. Sports provided structure, identity, and enjoyment, shaping both his competitive mindset and his appreciation for discipline and consistency.

On New Year’s Eve 2007, Lorn was caught in a violent public disturbance in London where he sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his arm, torso, and both legs. The injuries were life-threatening and required 17 major surgeries, followed by a long hospital stay complicated by infections, including MRSA, and compartment syndrome. Over time, the injuries led to chronic complications, including lymphoedema and progressive loss of function in his right leg.

Despite extensive rehabilitation efforts over many years, Lorn continued to experience recurring infections and mobility limitations that significantly impacted his quality of life. After years of medical management and ongoing decline in function, the decision was made to proceed with a below-the-knee amputation in September 2022 in order to improve his long-term health and independence. The transition marked the beginning of a new phase in his recovery and adaptation.

Since his amputation, Lorn has focused on rebuilding both physically and mentally, while continuing to manage the long-term effects of his original injuries. Through the ReDefine program, he is working toward regaining strength, improving performance, and restoring confidence in his body. His goals are rooted in independence, family, and purpose - while also using his journey to demonstrate that progress and reinvention are possible even after life-altering trauma.
