PATHOLOGY: Above Knee Amputee
Marcus Cole spent much of his early life finding connection and escape through time with friends, valuing relationships and the sense of belonging they brought. That same sense of purpose carried into his military career, where he served in the U.S. Army from 1996 to 2013 as a 91B Combat Medic. Over nearly two decades of service, Marcus held a wide range of roles across multiple duty stations and deployments, supporting fellow service members both in clinical settings and in operational environments around the world.
After his military career, Marcus faced a significant physical setback when a failed total knee replacement ultimately led to an above-knee amputation in 2017. At the same time, he was navigating major personal challenges, including a divorce, making that period of his life especially difficult. Despite these obstacles, Marcus has worked hard to maintain a steady and grounded outlook, focusing on moving forward rather than being defined by his past.
Marcus is intentional about not letting his identity rest solely on his military service - viewing it as an important chapter, but not the whole story. He is now focused on discovering what comes next, seeking a renewed sense of purpose and direction while continuing to build both physical and mental strength.
Through the ReDefine program, Marcus is looking to push himself physically while also learning how to properly recover and sustain his progress. Mentally, he is working toward a deeper level of self-acceptance - moving beyond simply telling himself he’s enough, to truly believing it - and hopes to use his journey to encourage and support others along the way.
