Meet Adaptive Athlete: Paul Ashcraft

CAPT Paul Ashcraft, US Navy, Ret.

DOB: 1964

DOI: January 2013

PATHOLOGY: Stroke

Paul Ashcraft

Paul grew up in Illinois with a love for outdoor adventure, especially mountain biking and downhill skiing. These pursuits taught him both discipline and joy, and he carried that drive into a long and accomplished career of service.

Commissioned into the Navy in 1986, Paul served 29 years as an Intelligence Officer, deploying several times aboard carriers and for IFOR before retiring as a Navy Captain in 2015. In January 2013, he suffered a stroke that significantly changed his life. Recovery has been long and difficult, with daily reminders of the things he once did effortlessly. Still, Paul finds strength in proving wrong those who tell him what he can’t do. Accomplishing even small milestones gives him a positive mindset and reinforces his resilience.

Through adaptive training, Paul seeks to maximize the physical abilities he still possesses and continue challenging himself both physically and mentally. He views this next chapter as an opportunity to learn, grow, and redefine what’s possible.
