PATHOLOGY: Spinal Cord Injury
Terrance grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. He grew up loving healthy competition whether it was football, basketball, cycling, archery, and even board games. His love for performance and people would eventually lead him to earn a bachelor’s degree in Health Science and Rehabilitation Counseling, followed by a master’s in Film Production. Just one week after graduating high school, however, Terrance was involved in a devastating car accident that left him with a C2 spinal cord injury, shattered femurs and pelvis, broken ribs, and a bruised kidney. The accident left him an incomplete quadriplegic, paralyzed from mid-chest down.
Recovery was physically, mentally, and emotionally grueling for Terrance. Years of rehabilitation helped him regain some independence, but adapting to life post-injury has been an ongoing journey. From chronic pain to the loss of physical abilities and social challenges, Terrance has faced moments of deep struggle, especially with how others perceive him and how he’s learned to perceive himself. But through it all, his perspective has evolved. He now sees his story not as a tragedy, but as a powerful example of perseverance. The same work ethic that once drove Terrance on the field now fuels his recovery. He may move differently, but his mindset is still strong.
Terrance’s goals now go beyond just physical progress. He wants to compete in adaptive Spartan races and increase mobility in his legs, while also building overall strength and physical confidence. More importantly, he wants to be the kind of role model he did not have, especially for others who are facing similar challenges. As someone who once struggled with confidence and self-image, he is working to give himself grace and embrace the journey, not just the destination. During his time at ATF, Terrance plans to focus on transforming not only his body but also his spirit. He is determined to live out his purpose as a positive force for those around him and for the younger generations.
