PATHOLOGY: Above Knee Amputee
Tony Thomasson has been an athlete for as long as he can remember. He ran cross country and played soccer, baseball and football before joining the Marine Corps, where he continued competing through travel softball and intramural baseball. Athletics were more than something Tony enjoyed, they were a major part of his identity. He served as a Marine Corps Sergeant and Disbursing Technician, deploying to Afghanistan in 2009 with the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, where he spent a year supporting logistics and accounting operations in Helmand Province.
In November 2023, a seemingly harmless moment changed everything. While watching a football game, Tony jumped a few inches into the air to chest bump a friend and ruptured both of his quad and patellar tendons. Six surgeries to repair the injuries ultimately failed. After years of re-injury, falls, physical therapy and complications, Tony faced an impossible choice: fuse his knee or amputate. In November 2025, he chose amputation in hopes of finally regaining some quality of life.
The physical recovery was only part of the battle. Tony experienced a deep depression and a profound loss of identity, purpose and self-worth. After years of feeling unlike himself, he now comes to ReDefine determined to find his way back. His daughter is a major part of that motivation, he wants to be the father she needs and be able to coach her in whatever sports she chooses.
For Tony, the goal is to compete again. To be athletic again. To feel like himself again. ReDefine is an opportunity to begin rebuilding the person he knows is still there, while learning how to navigate life as a new amputee. He knows there is a lot of work ahead, but he also knows he has to do it.
