PATHOLOGY: Below Elbow Amputee
Tyler grew up right down the road in Allen, Texas and devoted himself to sports from the moment he could hold a stick. He played hockey his entire life, from the age of five until now. Additionally, he played baseball, soccer, and a little bit of golf. He fell in love with sports because of the team camaraderie, competition, and an opportunity to be present in the energy of the game.
After graduating from highschool, Tyler attended Tufts University where he was a standout hockey player and a major contributor to the team for three years.
On August 11th, right before returning to Tufts for his senior year, Tyler was doing yard work at home and removing gutters from the home. They had just wrapped up for the day and only needed to take the gutters to the trash. Tyler lifted up the gutter and was walking it to the trash when it broke in half, falling over onto a power line. The electrical current traveled through Tyler’s left arm and out his right foot, immediately knocking him unconscious.
Tyler spent about six weeks in the hospital, undergoing about 15 surgeries throughout, resulting in amputation of his arm below the elbow. Despite a grueling recovery process, Tyler has maintained the mindset that somebody always has it worse and to not take anything for granted.
Tyler wants to use his time at ATF to build up his confidence again, post injury. He admits to being ashamed or trying to hide his prosthetic when he is out in public and wants to break free from that and find the confidence to get back out on the ice again.
