PATHOLOGY: Below Knee Amputee
Victoria Player grew up in Belmont, Ontario, and has always found ways to stay active. Today, cycling, yoga and rock climbing are at the center of her athletic life. She also took up triathlon and snowboarding after her amputation, discovering an entirely new world of sports and opportunities.
At 18, Victoria partially lost her left lower leg in a farm accident. For the next 27 years, she endured multiple surgeries and fusions while living with a painful, fused ankle. After developing osteomyelitis and battling a bone infection for three years, she ultimately chose to have the rest of her lower leg amputated in 2012.
For Victoria, the amputation felt less like a loss and more like a release. After years of pain limiting what she could do, she was ready, and the decision opened the door to becoming more physically active than she had been in decades. She threw herself into new sports and has continued looking for ways to challenge herself.
Victoria discovered Hyper through an adaptive climbing night and now wants to get stronger, learn how to train harder and bring those lessons into her climbing competitions. Just as importantly, she is looking forward to the community and the opportunity to meet people who share her drive to keep pushing.
