PATHOLOGY: Above Elbow Amputee
Sgt William Santos, US Army Ret. was born in New York and spent most of his childhood playing hooky from school. He preferred to spend his time outside, playing sports with his friends. After earning his GED, William joined the Army in 1978. The next three decades of his life was spent serving in the military, serving with the National Guard, and working as a civilian.
On October 17th, 2006, while assigned as route clearance on a combat tour in Iraq, William’s vehicle was hit by an IED. As a result of the explosion, William sustained the loss of his left arm below the elbow. After returning stateside, he struggled to cope and stayed locked in his house, gaining 100lbs. It wasn’t until he connected with Wounded Warrior Project that he started to come out of his shell again and found healing through being active.
William is always up for a challenge and loves to be pushed. He has some upcoming bike rides that he wants to prepare for physically. Although William is constantly looking for things to keep him moving, he admits it’s hard for him to slow down and calm his mind. One of his big goals is to grow in his techniques around mindset and meditation and learn how to enjoy being still. He has some big bike rides coming up and is looking forward to physically preparing for them.
